Titus Andronicus (2010)

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

After his victorious campaign against the Goths, the roman general Titus Andronicus returns to Rome, carrying a precious loot, Tamora, the queen of the defeated. When he decides to sacrifice one of her sons, a bloody cycle of violence opens and traps all the heroes. Thirst for power and revenge and perversion of authority activate the darkest instincts in a play where cruelty and violence meet no boundaries.

Antzela Brouskou, the director of the play, notices:
If we are concerned about Titus Andronicus nowadays, it’s because we are also concenrned about the commercialization of horror that has become a part of our everyday life through the television, cinema and the easy access to the internet. The graphic images of human pain, torture and humiliation of the human body do not necessarily belong only in the elizabethan era. The on stage representation of violence in our times, automatically raises the question of violence as means of entertainment or as an esthetic event.
